In practice, most of our method developments involve aspects of chemistry, physics, informatics, mechanics and biology. For many projects we adapt, design and build our own tools if they are not available or do not (yet) exist.

Our facility houses the full range of electron microscopy equipment, from sample preparation to microscopy and computing. All our TEMs are equipped with software for automatic collection of large 2D datasets using the digital cameras. All our TEMs are equipped with 3D electron tomography software. We house a wide variety of reconstruction and visualization packages.

Our instrumentation includes conventional fixation and staining, cryo immobilization using high pressure freezing and freeze substitution, cryo plunging, labeling, cryo sectioning, cryo microscopy.

For correlative microscopy we have dedicated equipment, including a freezing stage that allows imaging of frozen-hydrated specimen on a fluorescence light microscope as well as an integrated scanning light microscope in a TEM.

We are part of the Molecular Cell Biology department of the LUMC. De department also houses the light microscopy facility of the LUMC. Within the department we have access to all light microscopy equipment available in the light microscope facility atthe LUMC.

The Netherlands Center of Electron Nanoscopy (NeCEN, www.necen.nl) is located in close vicinity to our labratory. Through this facility we have access to two Titan Krios 300 kV TEMs.
