As a Light Microscopy and Imaging Specialist you will ensure the operation of all advanced light microscopes, comprising confocal and multipurpose research microscopes and oversee installations and daily maintenance. You will use your expertise and knowledge of experimental set-ups to create tailored imaging protocols to resolve complex imaging problems. You will be expected to respond to the demands of the users of the facility patiently and inventively. You will train, assist and supervise researchers with different levels of experience (from Bachelor’s degree students to highly experienced scientists) and you will give them instructions where necessary and appropriate. You will guide these users in the critical interpretation of their imaging data and show them how to acquire images (e.g. with LASX) and process images (e.g. with Photoshop; Huygens deconvolution; FIJI), and how to perform (semi-automated) image analysis (e.g. with FIJI). You will carry out all required back-up tasks involving electron microscopy equipment.


– a University or Higher Professional Education+ (HBO+) degree in Science;
– ample experience in the application of advanced light (confocal) microscopy techniques and relevant software packages (e.g. LASX, FIJI, Huygens) and the ability to disseminate your knowledge to others in an effective way;
– a service mentality, but also the ability to supervise and guide newcomers of varying backgrounds;
– the capability and an interest in learning new techniques;
– the ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team;
– the ability to set priorities and directives;
– the ability to write technical manuals and make contributions to funding applications and research articles;
– the ability to communicate in English (fluently) and preferably also in Dutch, or the willingness to learn Dutch.


you will be appointed for an initial period of 12 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, you will be offered a permanent contract
– you will be classified as an Education-/Research Officer Level 1 in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO)

Faculty of Science

The Department of General Instrumentation (GI) is a shared facility of the Faculty of Science at Radboud University. It plays an important role in our international, scientific and dynamic community, and offers services to a large number of scientists and students from all over the world.
Our laboratory hosts a number of medium-large to large instruments such as light and electron microscopes and devices for element analysis and separation techniques. The group currently consists of four technicians/scientists in charge of equipment.
